Silver Prince of Wales Lancers inter-squadron Cricket winners Medal, Birmingham, Navy, Army & Air Force, 1938. A sterling silver medal awarded to a Sgt Wells of C Squadron, one face with engraved inscription inside a laurel wreath, the other side with the Prince of Wales Lancers crest above a sphynx and the word Egypt below which is engraved ‘Sgt Wells’. The medal weighs 18.3g and measures 3.2cm across.
The Prince of Wales Lancers were stationed in Egypt multiple times in the interwar years. In December 1935 B and C squadrons were sent to Egypt with 29 armoured cars as a response to the Italian invasion of Abyssinia and strengthening garrisons in Libya. By the end of 1936 they had returned to England and appear not to have returned to North Africa until 1941 – which makes the date on this medal slightly odd, although the only date is that of the hallmark which may not correspond to the date of its awarding.
