A sterling silver replica of a Roman cochlearium spoon in very good condition with no dings or dents. The spoon weighs 8.8g and measures 11cm by 2cm and is hallmarked for Sheffield, 1975. The makers mark is for Leonard Jones of Cirencester, the Roman name of which was Corinium and I’ve seen these spoons referred to as Corinium style spoons.ย However the term cochlearium refers to Roman spoons with a long handle tapering to a point and its thought these handles were used to extract cooked whelks or snails from their shells and the same word, cochlearium, was also used to denote a place where snails could be bred for eating
