| Set of silver sugar tongs by Hester Bateman with bright cut engraved decoration including a โBโ in the cartouche at the top of the bend. The tongs are hallmarked silver and have Batemanโs makers mark but the date letter is worn.
Prior to the mid 1770s most of Batemanโs work was for other silversmiths and was sold with their makers mark and she retired in 1790. So its likely these were produced between 1775 and 1790. Hester Bateman (bap. 1708 โ 16 September 1794[1]) was an English silversmith, renowned for her high quality flatware and ornamental silverware. A craftswoman working within the family business, she was succeeded in turn by her sons, daughter-in-law, grandson and great-grandson. The Bateman family silversmithing company lasted until the middle of the nineteenth century. |
